Eating Seasonally This Winter

Eating Seasonally this Winter

As we are getting into the colder months, it is more important than ever to look after our immune system. Luckily, our in-house nutritionist, Jarred Rabie has given us some tips on eating seasonally this winter.

Seasonal eating is basically simple and intuitive. It’s all about consuming foods that naturally thrive in the current season. Seasonal foods are packed with nutrients that are tailored to the specific season. As an example, in Summer, we have an abundance of tropical fruits as their high-water content helps to keep us hydrated! Seasonal foods also taste better, where produce is at its peak of its flavour. Seasonal foods are also cheaper, as it is generally in higher supply too!

In Winter, our bodies crave warming and nourishing foods to help combat the cold weather and to boost our immune system. Nature offers us an abundance of seasonal fruit and vegetables that are perfectly suited to meeting these needs.

  • Root vegetables such as carrots, beets, parsnips & sweet potatoes thrive in the Winter months. They are rich in vitamins, minerals & fibre, providing essential nutrients as well as supporting digestion & immunity.
  • Winter squash such as pumpkin & butternut squash are not only delicious in a soup or roasted, but are also rich in the immune-supporting antioxidants Vitamin A and C.
  • Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts & kale are rich in antioxidants & phytonutrients. They are especially excellent for supporting detoxification and boosting the body’s defences against pathogens.
  • Citrus fruits such as orange, grapefruit, lemon & lime are packed with Vitamin C, the go-to nutrient for supporting immune function.
